Glancing over at Brad, the descending sun created a golden glow around him and wild tingles raced up my legs. Only, I realized it wasn’t so much tingles as sharp, biting pain. Glancing down, I realized in moving over for the kids, I’d managed to step on top of a giant anthill. It was the type of hill with ants so huge, they use sticks and twigs to build the nest, pipe in indoor plumbing, and sell condominium spaces at premium prices before biting off the heads of their competition. Judging from the unbearable stinging progressing upward from my ankles to regions I didn’t want to think about, haste was the only form of action I could take.
The first irrefutable rule of chronically shy people is to never draw attention to yourself. The second rule is to never, ever get into a position where the first rule may come into question. In my sudden and overwhelming infatuation with Brad, I’d obliterated both rules and now I had to deal with the consequences. While everything in me screamed to rip off my jeans and jump in the pond, I instead grabbed Dorothy by one hand and Bill by the other and offered a beaming, yet completely unbalanced smile to Brad.
“Oh, look at how late it’s getting. I had no idea. We better hurry back to the house before the mosquitoes eat us alive.”
The mosquitoes didn’t have me worried. Not a bit. It was the millions of ants feverishly climbing up my legs beneath my jeans. Every step I took generated more discomfort until I was sure my jeans would spontaneously combust from the fire created by the bites inflicted by the creatures.
