Chasing Ghosts

Hardman community center

When I embarked on the adventure of writing my first sweet Victorian holiday romance, I debated using a real town for the setting or making one up. I knew I wanted the story to take place in Eastern Oregon, but where? I came across information about a ghost town named Hardman that had once been a stop along the stage route.

My curiosity led me to discover that Hardman, Oregon, once boasted several churches, a newspaper office and skating rink, along with a variety of other businesses.

As my imagination began to create the town in my head, my fingers began typing out the first story in the Hardman Holidays series – The Christmas Bargain.

Today, there are a handful of dilapidated old buildings in town, but the bones of those old structures help me picture what the town once looked like, back when it was a bustling town. I do know the school was located on one end of town. In fact, the school became a focal point in my new release and third book in the Hardman Holidays series, The Christmas Calamity.

Releasing Thursday (Nov. 13), the book tells the story of a beautiful prestidigitator who finds herself in Hardman with a broken down wagon. Lacking the funds required to fix it, she takes a temporary job as the schoolteacher and quickly falls in love with the community as well as the handsome man who keeps coming to her rescue.

 Blurb for The Christmas Bargain:

Luke Granger is about to get more than he bargained for…
As owner and manager of the Hardman bank, Luke Granger is a man of responsibility and integrity in the small 1890s Eastern Oregon town. When he calls in a long overdue loan, Luke finds himself reluctantly accepting a bargain in lieu of payment from the shiftless farmer who barters his daughter to settle his debt.

Book Excerpt The Christmas Bargain:

“Aren’t you observant, Mrs. Granger?”

“I try.” She hid her smile behind the mug of chocolate.

“I happen to know a thing or two about you.” He shot her a sideways glance.

“Do tell, kind sir.” Filly batted her eyelashes at him. If Luke didn’t know better, he would think she was being downright flirtatious.

“I have observed, dear woman, that you put others before yourself, you are a dedicated and caring friend and that you have a keen mind with a quick wit. You are clever, smart, and not afraid of hard work. You are very talented with domestic skills and are inspiring as a cook. Your chocolate pudding could make grown men weep.”

Filly offered him a perturbed glare. “So, Mr. Granger, I have missed my calling as a school teacher or perhaps a cook at the restaurant. If my chocolate pudding makes grown men weep, what will my peach pie do to the male population? Bring them to their knees? Make them beg for mercy?”

Luke laughed aloud, causing Filly to grin.

“Filly, my girl, you are something else.” Luke reached across the table and captured her hand in his. “You might not think I notice you, wife of mine, but I know you…”

Author Quick Chat with Shanna Hatfield

Hi, readers! Today I’ve got Shanna Hatfield here for a quick little chat. I posed this question to Shanna:

What part of a story — beginning, middle, or ending — do you most enjoy writing?

Here’s what she told me:

"The Beginning" Road Sign with dramatic blue sky and clouds. The part of a story I enjoy writing most is the beginning. All the ideas are fresh and exciting. The story could go anywhere from there! Although I have a direction in mind, sometimes the characters take over from the very beginning and lead me through how they want the story told. I like to come up with an engaging first paragraph that immediately draws the reader into the story.

So, here’s YOUR question for the day.  What “hooks” you and draws you into a story?

New Release from Shanna Hatfield – Marnie

New Release: Marnie by Shanna Hatfield

MARNIE

Marnie
Condemned to a future of shame and regret, Marnie Jones battles herself to keep going one day at a time. Divested of hope, she’s all but given up when a handsome stranger arrives in town.

Desperate for the marshal to ride on out of Pendleton, Marnie fears he’ll rekindle the embers of her broken dreams into a roaring flame before he leaves.

Married to his career, US Marshal Lars Thorsen avoids relationships of any kind. Spending his days transporting prisoners, guarding political figures, and chasing down fugitives, he doesn’t have room in his life for feelings or emotions.

Especially not the tender, protective feelings stirred by the woman who wants him or the two orphans who need him.

EXCERPT FROM Marnie

“Look, sugar, you know how much I enjoy being with you, but we need to stop this before… well, we just need to stop it.”

Marnie turned her back to Lars because it was too hard to see the surprise and hurt on his face at her words. She’d encouraged him to be friends, but she knew she needed to keep him at a distance. Her dream of experiencing a happy future with him was just that – a dream. The more time she spent with him, the harder it was going to be when he came to his senses and set his attention on some decent girl worthy of his love.

“Stop what?” Lars got to his feet and stepped behind Marnie, placing his hands on her shoulders, pulling her back against him. He breathed in her fresh, clean scent, not yet marred by the cloying perfume she wore when she was working. His breath stirred the tendrils of hair escaping the confines of the hairpins holding her tresses on top of her head. Sliding his hands down her arms, he wrapped them around her waist and allowed himself the luxury of holding her close.

“This,” Marnie whispered, her voice laced with misery as her legs began to tremble. She’d never, in her life, felt so cherished and cared for as she did at that moment with the arms of the man she loved holding her close.

“What if I don’t want to stop this? What if I want more than this?” Lars leaned down so his warm breath blew across her neck below her ear. He felt the tremor that passed over her as she closed her eyes, fighting against the emotions he knew he stirred in her.

“Lars,” she croaked, her voice laden with pain. “Don’t. Please don’t.”

“Don’t what? Hold you? Let you know I care about you? Kiss you?” He turned her around and pushed up her chin until she met his gaze. Her stormy blue eyes raged with an inner battle as he drew a finger along her jaw and across her chin before tracing the outline of her mouth.

When her lips parted slightly, Lars knew he was so far gone for the woman, there was no point of return. Blocking out thoughts of her profession, how wrong it should feel to have such an intense affection for her, he succumbed to his need to taste her, to hold her.
